This is my very first blog ever and I'm stuck already! whoo hooo. There is so much to say about Chinatown that I don't even know how or where to begin..
At the very last minute, I dug up this old drawing I did back in high school. Yes, the drawing is slightly cheesy.. I was trying to promote unity back then. But now that I look at it, I find it very relatable to Chinatown itself. I find Chinatown to be a super knit-tight community. It is diverse even in its "Chinese" community. You have youth, adults, seniors, people who speak different dialects of the Chinese language, different family dynamics, tourists, people who know the community inside out, and then you have people who see Chinatown by its appearance, and so much more. With thousands and thousands of people coming in and out of this compacted community, one can witness all of this 'diversity' within a few steps just into Chinatown. Although Chinatown is very compacted and filled with people, Chinatown still finds its way to get organized. But this type of organization does not happen overnight, it takes time and people. Chinatown is superbly amazing and is definitely a gem in the city. It is a place worth while to discover, to understand, and invest a lifetime of works in. Just like the drawing, it took days to finish. It is not perfect but very knit-tight within this one hand. It is diverse in the sense that, there are different hand gestures. All together, the hands come to be one. In such a simple form of drawing, it anticipates for artists to come and paint and add colors to these hands. Chinatown is a place for the people. And it takes these people to gather and organize what is best for this community of their own. --wendy chen
