Youth for Single Room Occupancy

YSRO stands for Youth for Single Room Occupancy and is the sister program of AAA. Founded in in 2006, the program was initially established to enhance community resilience in the face of disasters by offering culturally and linguistically appropriate disaster preparedness workshops tailored for low-income and monolingual families and seniors residing in Chinatown’s single room occupancies. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by these communities, YSRO aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively during emergencies.

As the program evolved, it expanded its focus beyond disaster preparedness. YSRO now actively promotes intergenerational service activities, creating opportunities for youth and elders to engage in collaborative projects that foster mutual understanding and respect. This intergenerational approach not only helps combat social isolation among seniors but also empowers youth by providing them with leadership roles and hands-on experience in community service. Additionally, YSRO emphasizes youth leadership development, equipping young participants with essential skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Through workshops, mentorship, and community projects, youth are encouraged to take on active roles in their communities, driving positive change and advocating for the needs of vulnerable populations. The program also prioritizes cross-cultural community building, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to celebrate their differences and shared experiences. By facilitating dialogue and collaboration, YSRO helps to create a more inclusive community where everyone feels valued and heard.

Intergen at the International Hotel

Every third Saturday of the month, YSRO partners with the International Hotel to create a vibrant and engaging community event for senior residents living in the building and the surrounding neighborhood. These gatherings are designed to foster connection and joy, providing a space for seniors to socialize, participate in activities, and enjoy the company of younger generations. During these events, youth participants take the lead, organizing a variety of crafts and games that cater to the interests and cultural backgrounds of the seniors. Activities range from traditional art projects to interactive games that encourage teamwork and creativity. The youth also present culturally relevant topics, sharing stories, music, and traditions that resonate with the seniors, enriching the experience for everyone involved. In addition to the YSRO youth, volunteers from schools across the city come to lend a helping hand. These students play a crucial role in facilitating the activities, ensuring that everyone feels included and engaged. The collaboration not only enhances the event but also helps build a sense of community among participants of all ages. Overall, these monthly gatherings serve as a wonderful opportunity for intergenerational bonding, promoting mutual respect and understanding while combating social isolation among seniors. The positive energy and shared experiences create lasting memories, making each event a highlight for both the youth and the seniors involved.
